Reception

Reception is part of the Early Years Foundation Stage 0 to 5 curriculum.  You can find details of the curriculum on the Foundation Years website.

When the children come into Reception, we focus on ensuring the children settle in their new environment and feel confident and comfortable. Once this has happened, the Reception staff informally assess each child’s level of development. This enables them to start to plan appropriate activities according to the children’s needs and to promote development.

In Reception, we like to achieve a balance between adult-led activities and independent, focused activities. The staff continually make observations, so this enables them to pitch activities accordingly due to knowing the children's levels of development and each of them personally.

We start to learn phonics and have a daily phonics session.  We use the DfE approved scheme Bug Club created by Pearson Education.

Lots of learning takes place through play both inside the classroom and in our outside area. We have a fantastic, large outside area that is enjoyed by children and staff alike. The staff also move the children on with their reading, writing and mathematical development.  Parents are able to follow their child’s learning via our online learning journal, Tapestry. We encourage parents to upload events from the children's home lives in order for them to share them with the class.
